What if you could explore the treasures of Berkeley County as a tourist during an interesting, fun, and family-oriented series of events? What if you could participate in the vast array of excellent happenings – right here at home? You can!

The inaugural Humanities Festival 2020 is being held “Around the Corner  +All Over Berkeley County” from 4/23 – 4/25/20 to increase awareness of and interest in the history, culture, faith, food and the arts of Moncks Corner and Berkeley County communities. The Festival is a “tourism in your own backyard” event with terrific economic development benefits and designed to create awareness of the natural, human, historical, institutional and retail assets of our incredible home place – taking place in a variety of interesting and treasured locations. The Humanities Festival has something for everyone in your family! Come and gain extraordinary insights into the places where we live and play.

Beginning on Thursday (April 23rd) with an inaugural Taste of Berkeley event in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Moncks Corner, the opening event hosts a mix of music, food, drink and fellowship at the Interpretive Center of Old Santee Canal Park. (Tickets are required and will not be available for purchase at the door).

Friday (4/24th) brings a variety of choices for families: a Grant Writing workshop, Nature Lovers’ Guided Tours via Kayak, Bi-lingual Storytelling, Presentations about Barbados and Carolinas, and Guided Tours of Old Santee Canal Park… to name a few. After work and school, Music on Main features student musicians in Unity Park and a Shop Crawl with downtown Moncks Corner merchant specials. The sensational day culminates in the dynamic Faith in the Public Square conversation with local pastors.

Saturday (4/25th) is chock-a-block full of amazing family-friendly programs. From the tour-guided History Bus Tour of Ft. Fairlawn, Biggins Church, Cherry Hill Cemetery, Taveau Church and Mepkin Abbey (Tickets Required) to Berkeley Artist Guild Lessons to Berkeley Bees exhibit to history presentations (Churches Burned in the Revolution and Berkeley County as Cradle of Southern Culture) to Your Own History Tour of N. Berkeley County, it’s a thrilling day. 


The Town of Moncks Corner will also host their inaugural Lowcountry’s Hometown Festival from 11am – 3pm on Saturday, April 25th. A Kid Zone will be located at the Train Depot which will have an electric bull, rides and a petting zoo. Food trucks will be in front of the railroad tracks. Unity park hosts dance performances and will announce the winner for the BBQ Cook-off which will be held at the Regional Recreation Complex. Also enjoy Antique tractors, antique cars & craft vendors along Main Street starting at Carolina Ave. 

End the day in a memorable way with the whole family at Stony Landing enjoying a historical Revolutionary War play, “Near This Spot” (Tickets are required.) and food trucks for dinner on your own.

Throughout the Festival, entry is free to Old Santee Canal Park, the Berkeley Artists’ Guild exhibits at The Depot, and diverse programs take place throughout the County.

The Humanities Festival 2020 is funded in part by a grant from South Carolina Humanities. Every year, SC Humanities sponsors the Humanities Festival in a community in South Carolina. Started in 1993 in honor of the Council’s 20th Anniversary, the Humanities Festival has been held in 19 different South Carolina cities. Each festival celebrates the local history and culture of the host community, engaging the citizens in lectures, discussions, films, and exhibits and facilitating partnerships between cultural organizations and community groups.
